The Modified Moving Average (MMA), also known as Running Moving Average or Smoothed Moving Average, applies heavier smoothing than a standard EMA by using a longer effective period. This makes it slower to react but more resistant to noise, which is useful for identifying sustained trend direction.
This sample plots CSCO daily data as a line series and overlays two MMA indicators — MMA(20) in purple (#9170CB) and MMA(50) in orange (#E96A26) — on the same plot for short-term vs. long-term trend comparison. The chart features dual Y-axes, a synchronized line scroller, a range picker, and a range selector, with the default view from December 2001 to September 2006.
