We&#8217;ve interviewed him to learn more. What is the purpose and scope of your work?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Mark Painter: The Public Health service of Devon County Council focuses on reducing health inequalities, trying to reduce the gap between the most and least deprived within the population. The aim is for people to live longer in better health.<\/p>\n<p>There are three main areas of public health:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Health improvement<\/strong> \u2014 commissioning of services including Public Health Nursing, sexual health, substance misuse, healthy lifestyle, NHS Health Checks, public mental health and oral health promotion; work closely with DCC colleagues and partners such as the district and borough councils, police, fire and rescue, NHS, education and environmental health.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Health care public health<\/strong> \u2014 Public health provides clinical effectiveness advice and provides Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) with important information and data to aid them in their decision.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Health protection<\/strong> \u2014 the main functions of health protection are now the responsibility of Public Health England but there remains a local authority role in overseeing the health protection function to ensure it meets the needs of the local population; also contribute to emergency preparedness including inclement weather, flooding or pandemics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Community and Public Health Intelligence Team provide data and analysis to support the work of the Public Health service and the County Council more widely.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8496\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Population-by-quinary-age-bands.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Population-by-quinary-age-bands.png 947w, https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Population-by-quinary-age-bands-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Population-by-quinary-age-bands-768x380.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 947px) 100vw, 947px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>A: What role does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/20\/data-visualization-definition-history-examples\/\">data visualization<\/a> play in your work? Why do you need it and how is it helpful?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>MP: Generally, data is difficult. Providing someone with a table of numbers, or a paragraph of text often doesn\u2019t get the message across. Maps and charts can be easier to understand, although it\u2019s important to ensure that they are properly formed and aren\u2019t misleading, for example by shortening the axes to emphasize a change.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Indices-of-Deprivation-Domains.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Indices-of-Deprivation-Domains.png 936w, https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Indices-of-Deprivation-Domains-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Indices-of-Deprivation-Domains-768x347.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>A: Please describe a project in which you are making use of AnyChart: What is the purpose of the project, who uses it, why, and what technology is it built on?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>MP: The County Council produces analysis of the health and well-being of the population in its area \u2014 there are about 50 indicators used. The profiles also need to be produced for a range of geographic levels (ranging from around 100 people to over 750,000). In total there are around a thousand areas. With so many combinations we needed a way to generate the charts dynamically.<\/p>\n<p>The data are stored on GitHub as CSV files, and the pages served by WordPress using custom built templates.<\/p>\n<p>The site is used by elected officials to get a sense of the people they represent, members of the public and a range of partner organisations \u2014 local councils, community and voluntary groups, the police etc.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Job-Seekers-Allowance-Claimant-Count.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Job-Seekers-Allowance-Claimant-Count.png 957w, https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Job-Seekers-Allowance-Claimant-Count-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Job-Seekers-Allowance-Claimant-Count-768x378.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 957px) 100vw, 957px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>A: How do you use AnyChart in that project? What kind of data does AnyChart visualize, and what <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.anychart.com\/Quick_Start\/Supported_Charts_Types\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">chart types<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/features\/\">features<\/a> are most helpful?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>MP: The datasets we use cover topics such as demographics (age of population, births, deaths), deprivation, social security benefit claimants, academic attainment, ill-health estimates and use of health services.<\/p>\n<p>We use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/chartopedia\/chart-type\/stacked-area-chart\/\">stacked area charts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/chartopedia\/chart-type\/line-chart\/\">line charts<\/a> (some with <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.anychart.com\/Axes_and_Grids\/Scales#inversion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">reversed scales<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.anychart.com\/Appearance_Settings\/Background#fill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">coloured backgrounds<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/chartopedia\/chart-type\/bar-chart\/\">bar charts<\/a> (with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/chartopedia\/chart-type\/error-chart\/\">error bars<\/a> which is essential and not something all packages offer), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/chartopedia\/chart-type\/stacked-bar-chart\/\">stacked bar charts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/chartopedia\/chart-type\/dot-chart\/\">dot plots<\/a> (again with background colours), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/chartopedia\/chart-type\/pie-chart\/\">pie charts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8497\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Use-of-health-services.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Use-of-health-services.png 889w, https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Use-of-health-services-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.anychart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Use-of-health-services-768x330.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 889px) 100vw, 889px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>A: Why did you choose AnyChart? But we are so glad even non-programmers can figure out how to create charts using our solution! We&#8217;ll definitely keep on making our docs even easier to grasp.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Thanks for your answers! Just one more question: When asked by a friend which JS charting library to use for data visualization, how would you recommend AnyChart in one or two phrases?<\/p>\n<p>MP: Being a public authority there\u2019s a limit to what I can say in regard to recommending one product over another.
